The perfect companion to almost every dish, Wild Rice can also make a great meal on all its own. This colorful, long and thin grained rice variety if native to North America, and is filled with nutrients, making it a great choice to swap out for regular white rice.
Earthy and flavorful, this whole grain is ideal for concocting anything from a wild rice risotto, to a rice bowl, or a healthy rice salad. Wild rice has a slight chew, so it pairs wonderfully with softer or crunchier textures. The flavor is nutty and earthy, and the color dark, giving testimony to all those nutrients. Wild rice is gluten-free, very low in fat and very high in fiber and protein.
Wild rice is easy to cook, and we always recommend giving it a rinse first, much like quinoa. 1 cup of uncooked wild rice will yield about 3 or 4 cups of cooked rice. The proportion for cooking wild rice is about 1 cup rice to 6 cups water, simmering covered uncovered 45 minutes. The cooking time is long, but the flavor payload is big! Drain any excess water. Use wild rice in casseroles, soups, make a pilaf of sorts, make a stuffing for Thanksgiving, match it with fall harvest veggies, and maybe even blend it to make wild rice flour.
The brown rice standards in the US allow for 4 wild rice classes: Extra Fancy, Fancy, Choice and Sample Grade. Our wild rice is labeled “first quality” and “fancy”.
