Courrone de Touraine is an aged goat’s milk cheese from the Loire Valley that’s buttery, creamy, and an absolute delight! The rind is bloomy and brainy with ash that also comes through to the surface. It’s full of goaty and grassy aromas that tickle the nose the moment you open the package. Each bite has a little acid, but the cheese is very herbaceous, especially near the rind.
Courrone literally translates as the crown and is named after its doughnut shape. The beauty of the shape is that, when matured, it allows the cheese to mature on the inside along with the outside. This gives it a perfect ‘buttery pastry’ texture. Courrone de Touraine is a creation of the Loire Valley and is traditionally produced in limited quantities. Regional shops may label it Couronne Lochoise, but we offer the crème de la crème through famed cheesemaker Rodolphe Le Meunier.
This cheese has strong flavors and a texture that allows it to stand alone for serving, but it could also feature well on a cheese or charcuterie board. Pair it with dry white wines or medium bodied reds like Cabernet Franc.
