Different from Mexican oregano, our Mediterranean Oregano (Pronounced: oh-REHG-uh-noh) comes from Turkey, where it grows wild. It has a nicely balanced flavor, robust and peppery with slightly bitter flavors similar to rosemary and citrus.
Oregano is sometimes also known as Wild Marjoram or “That Italian oregano herb, you know, like on pizza”. It is one of the few herbs that is most fragrant when dried. Its taste is similar to sweet marjoram, though stronger.
Use it in Italian and Mediterranean cuisines on roasted vegetables, meats, fish, pastas, and sauces. Mix it with lemon, olive oil, salt and pepper for a greek dipping sauce for fresh breads. Olive oil, garlic, and oregano forms the flavor base for a wide variety of Italian dishes. In Turkey oregano is served as a finishing spice at the table, along with salt, pepper, and paprika or Aleppo peppers. Oregano’s bold flavor combines well with other strong flavors of the Mediterranean palate.
