La Peral Blue Cheese
A lovely and mellow cow’s milk blue cheese, La Peral hails from Asturias, in Northern Spain. It’s creamy and milder than other more intense Spanish blue cheeses like Cabrales or Veldeon, with a nice piquancy that accentuates with age. Often compared to creamy Italian Cambozola or Gorgonzola, La Peral is artisan cheese of small production, made by hand by cheesemaker Leon Alvarez.
Aged for at least 2 months, sometimes even 5, La Peral blue cheese has a texture that is moist and buttery, crumbly when young and softer and more cakey as it ages. Pair with sweet fruit like grapes or pears, a drizzle of honey, some meaty walnuts and a Tempranillo, Port, Sherry or any other sweet dessert wine.
