Medjool Dates were originally grown in Morocco, and were first introduced to the United States in the 1920’s. Since then they have blossomed in popularity as a healthy snack for children and adults, and a bright ingredient for use in both sweet and savory dishes. Medjool Dates can be recognized for their moist and soft slightly chewy texture, dark brown color, and ultra sweet flavor. They are the largest of the dried date varieties, and have been nicknamed “King of the Dates.” These dried dates have had minimal processing, have been dried with no sugar added, and have been left with their pits intact.
Along with raisins, figs, and apricots, dates fruit varieties are some of the most common dried fruits today, and have been enjoyed for millennia. Dates can be enjoyed alone, as an appetizer, in desserts, and in savory dishes. Stuff them with almonds, walnuts, creamy cheeses and spices for a cold snack. Dice them into oatmeal, hot cereals, or granola for breakfast. Diced dried dates are a sweet addition to muffins, cakes, cookies, and baked goods. For savory dishes and soups based on North African or Middle Eastern cuisine dates are complimented by ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, rosemary, rice, lemon, and raisins.
Dried dates in an airtight container can be stored for at least one year in a refrigerator, and even longer in the freezer. Gourmet Food World Dates are very nutritious, high in fiber, and rich in vitamins and minerals.
